Will a drugs detox program hurt my baby?

by WithDrawMe

I am on a detox program for my addiction to heroin. I’ve been on it almost two weeks and I’m planning to stick to it as in the past I would only half complete it but I’m doing the whole thing for my baby, myself and Ty – my boyfriend.

But I’m just wondering if the detox program will hurt my baby? I was on heroin for the first few weeks of pregnancy but I’m not taking it anymore and I’m almost 3 months pregnant.

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy, and I applaud you for getting yourself into a detox program. Sometimes you just need a motivation in order to get you going down the path you need to be on.
Since you said that you suffer from heroin addiction, I'm assuming that the detox program they will have you participating in will consist of Methadone. Pregnant women have been treated with methadone for more than 25 years and neither methadone or other opiates have not been shown to directly cause birth defects. However, your baby may experience some side effects from methadone. The most common are smaller-than-normal head size, low birth weight, and withdrawal symptoms. As babies born dependent on methadone grow, they usually will fall in the normal range for size and development.
I've have put the website that I got this information from. It has a lot of other good information that you might want to check out...info regarding withdrawls of the baby, doses of methadone, and interactions that may occur if you are given certain medications while on methadone.

Good luck w/ your pregnancy and w/ your recovery. Make sure you have a strong support system...that is crucial when it comes to the recovery process.

Don't listen to the people who said no, they have no experience with this. I am a recovering heroin addict on a methadone clinic and in school for nursing.

Yes it will, withrawals can cause miscarraiges...rehabs wont accept pregnant women for this reason...And almost all methadone clinics wont detox you if you are pregnant. You would be considered a high risk pregnancy for this reason.

If you are on methadone, or subutex, not suboxone, then your baby will be fine, it has extremely low side affects. some babies even come out with no withdrawals. your baby will need to stay in the NICU intil shes free some any withdrawals...

Stay on the program until you give birth, do not detox off of it until you give birth. that would have waaaaay more risks than methadone would. And make sure you let your program know you are pregnant if you havent already because it is serious if they kick you off or something happens, or they give you something you shouldnt be taking....It is best you work with them to promote safety for your baby.

As for social services taking your baby, dont worry about it, they have no right to, your medication is prescribe to you, so its totally legal...

check out this website, its about this thing called Mothers on Methadone...

Hope this helps, good luck...and ignore all the rude and ignorant comments, and please only take advice from people who are experienced and educated in this....

Good for you for getting the help you need.

As long as you let the detox program know you are pregnant, they will not give you any medications that are too risky to your baby. I've seen women coming off heroin who are on methadone protocols and eventually they wean off and their babies do just fine.

    Good luck, stay strong!

good for you for quitting your addiction for your child....that shows that you are a very responsible and caring person for it. Don't worry the detox won't harm your baby, in fact it will be good for it because it will be getting rid of all the harmful drugs from your body and it will then allow more good stuff (nutrients and vitamins) to get to your baby so that your baby will come out healthy as can be.

good luck with your pregnancy and your decision. and remember, although it may be hard at times, you are doing it for your unborn child's well-being (and i am pretty sure knowing that you are doing what is right for your child will help you stay on track).

Here's your option- if you don't do it, you may miscarry, or have a baby born with serious defects that you can't handle. If the baby is born the baby will be addicted to the drug and the hospital will have the baby taken away from you. Stay in the detox program and get clean for yourself and the baby. good luck

i would consult your ob. but being on heroin is definitely not good for your baby, so detoxing well be better for you and the baby.

Not doing the program will hurt your baby. Good for you for getting help, but please do not go back to using. Not in a million years is starting backup in anyway going to help your baby. There is no justification to that.

It will be a lot better than that heroin was! What were you thinking?

Not as much as the drugs will!

Good luck! You can do it!
  • Chuck
    No, it will help it.
