Percocet and 28 weeks pregnant?

by WithDrawMe

Hey everyone. So this sounded a little … off to me, but I wanted to see what you all thought. I have a friend who ended up in the ER last night because of severe back pain and they gave her a prescription for Percocet. Everything I’ve been reading has said there haven’t been extensive tests done to see if it’s safe during pregnancy, but that there’s a possibility off withdrawal symptoms in the baby since it’s a narcotic. I doubt they’d give her anything if it would really hurt her or the baby, but does anyone have any experience with this drug and being pregnant? They’ve only told her to take it for a week until she sees her OBGYN. Is that long enough to cause lasting damage?

Thanks in advance

I also took percocet while pregnant. I had kidney stones and they prescribed enough for a few weeks to get me through the pain of passing the stone. The baby is totally fine. No problems if it's taken sparingly and doesn't continue for a long period of time is what I was told by my high risk ob/gyn consult. He also suggested that the pain I was experiencing would be far more distressing/harmful for the baby than taking the drug when I needed it.
However, she should still probably see (or at least talk to) her own ob/gyn right away if she's been to emergency during her pregnancy.

i took vicodin while i was pregnant for syatica. they told me to take it only as perscribed. and if i continued to use it for a long period of time there could possibly be side effects such as withdrawls with the baby but i only took it when i needed to.

Percocet as well as vicodin are actually considered safe drugs during pregnancies. They have been prescribing them for many years. I was given vicodin for migraines. Its only a problem with withdrawal if she takes it every single day up to the day she gives birth.

She will fine. If her doctor gave it to her knowing she was pregnant then all is well. Many times doctors give pregnant woman drugs such as Percocet for pain relief for short periods of time. It is not like she is going to be taking it for weeks on end, so there is no real cause for concern.

When I was 26 weeks along with my first I had Demerol and Vicodin for about a week while I was on complete bed rest in the hospital. My baby is now a completely normal two year old.
